In today's digital society, those with learning disabilities and physical handicaps have great opportunity to succeed in education. Because of assistive technology, there are now readily available accommodations for learners with special needs.
For the following real world classroom technology solution, assistive technology can be added to help students with special needs succeed.
Consider the following assistive technology case:
Ben has low vision and as a result has difficulty reading printed text. He needs documents to be magnified greatly in order for him to be able to read them, or he can have the documents read to him.
For the real world classroom technology proposal, students must prepare an iMovie presentation covering the subgenres of literature. For Ben this might cause a problem if he is not able to see the computer screen as they produce their presentation. iZoom is a free Mac-based software program that allows students to drag a magnifying glass-type icon over any are of the monitos so they are able to read the screen more easily.
In this way, Ben will be able to fully participate in the group project and successfully manage the iMovie presentation without his low vision hindering his production. Assistive technology, in this case, proves to be successful at giving special needs students the same opportunities as everyone else.

The template in this particular situation is a weekly homework schedule. Along the left side are the student's 8 periods, and along the top are the days of the week.
Students can use this resource for not only any subject, but all of their subjects at the same time. One of the most important aspect of college that is vital for high school students to understand before they reach a university is organization. Writing everything down, from assignments to appointments, is vital in keeping up with grades and being able to manage one's time.
This template, overall, does not address any specific standard. However, with its ability to keep a student organized and well managed, it assists in every state and federal standard for students. Not only will they learn vital skills needed at a collegiate level, but also will keep themselves organized within all their high school classes, thus one step closer to meeting state standards.
Many students simply do not manage their time or plan out their school schedule at all. They just get their homework done so they can go hang out with their friends or go to some social function. At the same time, many students are involved with sports or after school activities and rush to get their homework finished. With this template, however, they will be able to sit down on a weekly basis and plan out their goals and manage their time effectively. In this way, they will more efficiently manage their time and become more productive overall with both their school work and after school time management.
In the end, the skills they learn through this tool, time management and organization, will assist them at both the collegiate and professional level of society.

"The Voting Public" Exercise
Original lesson plan link:
http://www.indianastandardsresources.org/lesson.asp?ID=746
The purpose of the preceeding exercise is to familiarize students with the topic of voting in the United States. From public documents to voter registration to voting machines, the students will learn the process and effeciency purpose of the American voting system.
Part one of the exercises is familiarizing students with public documents vital to understanding the voting system. This exercise can be better presented if the public documents were formed together in a Power Point presentation, instead of handing out pages upon pages of public documents.
Part two of the exercises introduces students to voter registration and various types of ballots. The lesson plan is satisfactory in that it introduces these materials over a projecter and students have the opportunity to learn how to register to vote online. Both of these technologies are the most effecient way to teach the material to these students.
Part three of the exercises divides the students into various groups and has them creating their own multimedia presentations on what they have learned thus far. The incorporation of technology into the classroom in this situation is an excellent way for students to re-form what they have learned and process it into a presentation for the class. No technology or technological efficiencies are needed to make this lesson better digitally equipped.
Part four, the final part of these excercises, has students creating a hand-out or brochure for people who do not have a proper understanding of the American voting system. A more efficient and enhanced idea for the student is to have them create a blog or multimedia website with resources and links to important voting information. In this way the students will not only re-process what information they have obtained, but will also create a useful and digitally up-to-date resource for those who are not fully aware of important facts on the American voting system.
Overall this multi-day exercise on teaching students the in and outs of the American voting system is very efficients and effective. However, as a whole, the lesson plan should integrate more effecient and advanced ways of presenting materials (i.e. Power Point, blogs). This integration allowes the students to properly learn, understand and process the information taught to them in the classroom.
